Indian Benchmarks Decline Second Straight Session Amid Weak Sentiment and Value Buying

The Indian equity benchmarks fell for a second straight session on Tuesday, September 29, as investor sentiment remained weak amid a surge in crude prices and rising U.S. bond yields. The SENSEX dropped as much as 707 points, while the NIFTY50 touched an intraday low of 22,570. However, value buying in heavyweights such as Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank and NTPC helped the indices recover most of their losses in late‑noon trading ahead of the monthly expiry of September futures and options.

Eleven of the 15 major sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange ended lower, led by the NIFTY Consumer Durables index which fell 2.71%. NIFTY Realty, Oil & Gas, PSU Bank, IT, FMCG, Auto and Bank indices also declined between 0.4% and 2%. Metal, pharma, media and healthcare shares attracted buying interest, while the broader markets underperformed their larger peers as the NIFTY Midcap 100 fell 1% and the NIFTY Smallcap 100 dropped 0.8%.

Azad Engineering shares surged 10.1% to a 52‑week high of ₹2,998 after the company inaugurated two exclusive lean‑manufacturing facilities for GE Vernova’s Gas Power business. The facilities, each spanning 7,600 sq. m, were opened at the Centre of Excellence & Innovation Centre in Tunikibollaram, Hyderabad, on September 28, expanding the firm’s footprint to three dedicated sites for the global energy giant. The Hyderabad‑based firm also noted that the state‑of‑the‑art plants manufacture highly engineered rotating and stationary airfoils and specialised machined parts to meet GE Vernova’s global demand in power generation and essential industries.

Titan was the top loser in the NIFTY50 index, falling 3% to ₹4,675. Wipro, HCL Technologies, Apollo Hospitals, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, Tata Consultancy Services and Max Healthcare also declined between 1.8% and 2.95%. On the other hand, Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports led the gains after Gautam Adani settled SEBI‑initiated proceedings over alleged minimum public shareholding violations by paying a settlement of ₹1.48 crore. The settlement covered Adani Enterprises Ltd, Adani Power Ltd, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, and Adani Transmission Ltd, now Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, along with their directors.

Overall market breadth remained negative, with 1,529 shares ending lower while 2,039 closed lower on the NSE. The SENSEX closed at 72,529, down 243 points, and the NIFTY50 closed at 22,716, down 64 points.
