The benchmark indices ended in negative territory amid foreign institutional investor outflows and a surge in global crude oil prices, and were further weighed down by a sell‑off in information technology and cement stocks. During the session, foreign institutional investors sold shares worth ₹576.20 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought equities worth ₹2,797.27 crore on a net basis.
Tata Consumer Products weighed down the NIFTY50 index, closing 1.65 % lower. It was followed by Nestle India at –1.52 %, Bajaj Finserv at –1.43 %, Bajaj Finance at –1.22 %, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries at –1.20 %, among the other top losers of the day. The index’s decline was driven by a 1.65 % fall in Tata Consumer Products, the largest single‑stock contribution to the loss.
NSE’s NIFTY Midcap 100 ended 0.08 % or 49.95 points higher at 61,963.15 on September 22. Container Corporation of India fell 4.12 %, Voltas 3.62 %, Tata Communications 2.64 %, Blue Star 2.56 %, and Oil India Ltd 2.37 % were among the top laggards. On the flip side, the top winners were Swiggy at 4.16 %, PI Industries at 3.80 %, Page Industries at 3.34 %, Vodafone Idea at 3.11 %, and BSE Ltd at 2.34 %. The midcap index’s modest gain reflected resilience in consumer and services sectors despite broader market weakness.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 closed at 19,815.45, marking a 46.50‑point or 0.23 % decline. It was weighed down by Kaynes Technology India at –5.34 %, Aegis Logistics at –4.78 %, Ather Energy at –3.09 %, Aditya Birla Real Estate Ltd at –3.08 %, and PG Electroplast at –3.05 %, which were among the top losers. On the contrary, the top gainers included Meesho at 9.79 %, Inventurus Knowledge Solutions at 5.45 %, RBL Bank at 5.17 %, Redington at 4.83 %, and Tenneco Clean Air India at 3.30 %.
Shares of Meesho surged after UBS raised the e‑commerce platform’s net merchandise value and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation estimates for the 2029‑2031 period. Analysts at Switzerland‑based UBS Group lifted the company’s NMV estimates by 7‑18 %, noted a similar increase in contribution profit estimates, and projected a 20‑40 % rise in EBITDA for FY29‑31. The higher NMV forecasts reflect continued flywheel from sellers and buyers, coupled with rapid expansion in its stock‑keeping units and logistics partners.
