SENSEX Falls 330 Points, NIFTY50 Ends Four‑Day Winning Streak Amid Global Uncertainty

Indian stock market indices ended in the red after the trading session on Tuesday, September 22, as investors focused on mixed global cues and foreign investor outflows in the market. NIFTY50 and BSE SENSEX closed lower, with NIFTY50 snapping its four‑day winning streak and SENSEX resuming a downward trend after a one‑day break. The NIFTY50 index closed 0.36% lower at 23,329 points, down from 23,414.30 points at the previous close. The SENSEX ended 0.44% lower at 74,529.08 points, compared with 74,858.99 points earlier. Heavyweight stocks such as Tata Consumer Products, Nestle India, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Sun Pharma, and Grasim Industries led the losses.

Investors also monitored highly volatile crude oil prices, which hovered between $102 and $98 per barrel on Tuesday. Reports indicated that the United Kingdom had agreed to provide further military support to Saudi Arabia amid Iran‑backed Houthi attacks in West Asia. An Al Jazeera report noted that China called the U.S. sanctions on Iranian airlines ‘illegal’ a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened potential measures. The artillery shelling and clashes between the Yemeni government and Houthis continued, adding to market uncertainty.

Elevated U.S. Treasury yields kept investors on edge, with the benchmark 10‑year Treasury note yield trading around 4.929% amid global financial tightening and interest hikes by central banks worldwide. Equity investors exercised selling pressure, driving capital rotation out of high‑growth sectors such as IT, banking, and industrials. Nifty IT, Nifty Cement, Nifty Bank, and Nifty PSU Bank were among the sectoral laggards. Meanwhile, coal and energy stocks like Coal India, Eternal, IndiGo, Titan, and Dr Reddy’s managed modest gains, reflecting a selective shift toward defensive names.

During the closing auction, the benchmark indices extended their losses. Tata Consumer Products fell 1.6%, Nestle India 1.5%, Bajaj Finance 1.2%, Bajaj Finserv 1.4%, Sun Pharma 1.2%, and Grasim Industries 1.2%. Among gainers, Coal India rose 3.2%, Eternal 1.8%, IndiGo 1.8%, Titan 1.1%, and Dr Reddy’s 1%. Out of the 50 stocks listed on NIFTY50, 15 ended in positive territory while 35 finished in the red zone after the session.

The day’s decline reflected a cautious stance amid geopolitical tensions and tightening monetary conditions. With foreign investors pulling capital out, the market’s sensitivity to global cues intensified. The mixed performance across sectors underscored the uneven recovery in India’s equity landscape. Investors will likely monitor upcoming economic data and central bank statements for further guidance. Until then, the market remains vulnerable to external shocks and domestic policy shifts that could influence investor sentiment.
