Defence Stocks Surge on BrahMos Deal, Order Book Momentum Boosts Nifty India Defence
Defence shares rallied on 6 October as investors reacted to the Ministry of Defence’s new ₹661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, which will procure BrahMos Fire Control System and Launchers for Indian Navy ships under the Buy (Indian‑IDDM) Category. The contract, valued at ₹661.50 crore, will feature a minimum of 68% indigenous content and involve several Indian industries, including MSMEs. The BrahMos system, described by the ministry as the Navy’s primary Surface‑to‑Surface Missile system, can target land and sea targets from extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy at supersonic speed. This development has underpinned a 1.61% rise in the Nifty India Defence index, which hit an intraday high of 9,328.45 points.
Key defence names such as HAL, Bharat Forge, Astra Microwave Products, Paras Defence, and Mishra Dhatu Nigam surged, with intraday gains ranging from 2.6% to 5.8%. HAL’s share price reached ₹4,812.80, up 2.8%, while Mishra Dhatu Nigam climbed to ₹465.85, up 5.8%. Paras Defence and Astra Microwave Products closed at ₹1,324.90 and ₹1,726 respectively, rising 4.6% and 4.4%. Bharat Forge and BEML also posted gains of 2.6% and 1.8%, trading at ₹1,881 and ₹2,005.90. BEL and Mazagon Dock recorded modest increases of 0.7% and 1.7% respectively.
The sector’s upward trajectory was reinforced by the Ministry’s announcement that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lay the foundation stone for a ₹218 crore facility to manufacture Shakti engines at HAL’s Koraput unit in Odisha on the same day. The new facility, aimed at boosting production of indigenous helicopter platforms such as the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and Prachand Light Combat Helicopter, will add a second production line to the Koraput division. Singh will also inaugurate a function marking the delivery of the 2,000th aero‑engine by HAL Koraput in Sunabeda.
Bharat Forge disclosed a long‑term contract with Pratt & Whitney Canada to supply mission‑critical aerospace engine components. The company will manufacture these components at its aerospace facility in India, designed for high‑performance, high‑value aero‑engine products. Vice‑Chairman and Joint Managing Director Amit Kalyani expressed confidence that the deal will support Pratt & Whitney Canada’s programmes and further India’s aerospace manufacturing expertise. The contract is expected to strengthen Bharat Forge’s position in the growing defence and aerospace sector.
BEML celebrated a milestone by unveiling India’s first indigenously designed 60‑tonne electric dump truck, the BH60‑EV, at its Mysuru Complex. The vehicle combines high payload capability with advanced electric powertrain technology, delivering zero tailpipe emissions during operation. Official statements indicate that the BH60‑EV can reduce operating costs by 40‑60% compared with conventional diesel equipment and cut annual CO2 emissions by approximately 130 tonnes per vehicle, subject to operating conditions. The launch underscores BEML’s commitment to high‑capacity electric mobility solutions for mining and infrastructure sectors.
Analysts note that while growth execution and margin normalisation risks persist, a robust pipeline of defence programmes, missile development, and export opportunities are expected to provide medium‑term tailwinds for the sector. The constructive outlook for companies like BEL, supported by government programmes such as Quick Reaction Surface‑to‑Air Missile, Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, and major naval initiatives, is anticipated to sustain a strong order book. Despite concerns over fund outflows amid elevated crude oil prices and US Treasury yields, the positive momentum and corporate actions have bolstered investor sentiment across the defence index.
