Dilip Buildcon Surges as RBI Raises Repo Rate, SENSEX Falls 500 Points

On Wednesday, October 7, Dilip Buildcon’s shares climbed as much as 3.6% to a session high of ₹415.20 per equity share after the company secured an order worth ₹1,800 crore from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). The order will see Dilip Buildcon lay, build, operate and expand petroleum and petroleum product (LPG) pipelines from Paradip, Odisha, to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, while the firm also received a provisional completion certificate for the ₹1,647 crore Karimnagar‑Warangal highways project. The rally was supported by the company’s robust business update and the market’s reaction to the RBI’s policy move.

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee, in its latest bi‑monthly review, unanimously raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, the first increase since February 2023. The decision was met with a negative reaction in the market, as the SENSEX tumbled as much as 0.79% to an intraday low of 72,488.29, while the NIFTY50 fell 0.98% to a session low of 22,552.60. At 1:24 PM, the S&P BSE SENSEX slumped 508.68 points, or 0.70%, to 72,559.13, and the NSE’s NIFTY50 stood at 22,571.85, down 204.25 points, or 0.90%.

Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth ₹2,961.30 crore on Tuesday, whereas domestic institutional investors purchased equities worth ₹5,088.92 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data. The top losers in the NIFTY50 index included Titan Company, Shriram Finance, Hindalco Industries, Asian Paints, and Bajaj Auto. Conversely, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, BSE, Coal India, and Eternal were among the top gainers, reflecting a mixed market sentiment amid the rate hike and global commodity pressures.

Rate‑sensitive stocks such as auto, real estate and other sectors were trading in the red on Wednesday, as the RBI’s repo rate hike was expected to dampen borrowing costs for these segments. In contrast, banking stocks were in the green zone, benefiting from the potential for higher interest income as lending rates could rise faster than deposit rates, widening net interest margins. The market reaction highlighted the differential impact of the rate hike across sectors.

Kalyan Jewellers India shares surged 6.03% to ₹581.20 per unit on the NSE after the company reported a consolidated revenue growth of more than 26% in the July‑September quarter of FY27, with a 27% revenue increase in India operations driven by strong same‑store sales across key markets. Utkarsh Small Finance Bank’s stock rose 6.7% to ₹14.43 per share after reporting a 54.9% year‑on‑year surge in total disbursements to ₹3,525 crore in Q2 FY27, and a gross loan portfolio of ₹20,063 crore.

Titan Company shares fell 4.7% to ₹4,335.60 after its Q2 FY27 business update showed domestic jewellery growth of around 21% year‑on‑year, below analysts’ expectations, citing a shift in festive demand to Q3FY27, high gold prices and a decline in investment‑led gold coin sales. Glass Wall Systems (India) Ltd shares dropped 7.6% to ₹254.70 after announcing a 7.7% decline in consolidated profit after tax to ₹17 crore in Q1 FY27, despite a 35.8% rise in revenue to ₹107 crore. Bharti Airtel shares climbed 2.35% to ₹1,853.10 after launching new postpaid plans with free international roaming and a monthly rental hike from ₹449 to ₹499.
