The RBI's decision followed the annual inflation rate rising to 4.82% in August 2026, the highest level since December 2024 and above the RBI's 4% target for the third consecutive month. The move was in line with broader expectations after rate hikes by several central banks, including the US Federal Reserve. The Middle East conflict and oil price uncertainty have fuelled inflationary pressures across the globe. Rate-sensitive sectors such as real estate, automobiles and NBFCs traded under pressure following the hike.
