NIFTY50 and SENSEX Open Flat Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty and Foreign Outflows
The NIFTY50 and BSE SENSEX opened flat on Tuesday, September 22, with the benchmark indices rising modestly despite geopolitical uncertainty, elevated global bond yields, and foreign investor outflows. At 9:15 am IST, the NIFTY50 opened 0.17 % higher at 23,454 points, up about 40 points from the previous close of 23,414.30. The BSE SENSEX opened 0.05 % higher at 74,901.50 points, 42 points above the prior close of 74,858.99. Oil prices had fallen roughly 7 % over the last five sessions but rebounded slightly after touching an intraday low of $99.90 per barrel.
During the session, IT names such as Infosys, TCS and HCL Tech were among the top laggards on the NIFTY50. HCL Tech fell 2 %, Tech Mahindra down 0.8 %, Infosys 0.7 %, Max Healthcare 0.6 % and ONGC 0.6 %. The market also saw a mix of gains, with Coal India up 2.6 %, Jio Financial 2.5 %, Dr Reddy’s 1.5 %, Adani Enterprises 1.3 % and HDFC Life 1 %. Out of the 50 constituents, 28 stocks traded in positive territory while 21 remained in the red zone. Before the opening bell, GIFT NIFTY futures for the September contract were trading 0.33 % lower at 23,457.50 points, signalling a positive opening for the day. Investors are closely monitoring global market cues, particularly the diplomatic efforts by Oman brokers to mediate a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which could influence Asian markets that are currently trading in the green. The slight rebound in crude oil prices, after a 7 % decline over five sessions, also provides a modest backdrop for the market’s cautious stance.
On Monday, September 21, foreign investors sold ₹576.20 crore of assets in the capital market, while domestic buyers added ₹2,797.27 crore of support. Despite the outflows, the indices closed higher, with the SENSEX ending a two‑day losing streak and the NIFTY50 closing green for a fourth straight session. The domestic buying pressure helped offset the foreign sell‑off, contributing to the indices’ modest gains at the close.
At 9:45 am IST, the NIFTY50 was up 0.18 % at 23,456.75 points, while the BSE SENSEX traded 0.14 % higher at 74,971 points. The market’s flat opening reflects cautious sentiment amid geopolitical tensions and higher bond yields, even as crude oil prices edged above $100 per barrel after a recent pullback. The modest gains in the indices suggest that domestic investors are maintaining a supportive stance, but the overall mood remains subdued as global cues continue to dominate market sentiment.
