Welspun, MCX, Zydus Reach 52‑Week Peaks Amid Volatile Market

On Friday, September 25, five Nifty 500 stocks—Zydus Lifesciences, Multi‑Commodity Exchange (MCX), Welspun Corp., Allied Blenders & Distillers, and Engineers India—each touched a 52‑week high during the trading session, despite overall market volatility. The benchmark NIFTY50 index was trading 0.25% higher at 23,120 points in the afternoon session, up from 23,063.10 at the previous close. Meanwhile, the BSE SENSEX was 0.37% higher at 73,859 points, compared with 73,580.54 at the prior close, according to exchange data. The broader indices remain subject to weak momentum cues amid continued foreign investment outflow, a bounce back in global crude oil prices, and elevated US Treasury yields to multi‑year highs.

Zydus Lifesciences shares surged 2.3% to an intraday and 52‑week high of ₹1,208.60 on Friday, compared with ₹1,180.30 at the previous close. After touching the year‑high, the stock traded 1.5% higher during the afternoon, hovering around ₹1,198.50. Trading volumes exceeded 1.7 million equity shares across NSE and BSE, indicating elevated investor interest despite overall market weakness. The company’s defensive sector rotation momentum saw investors exiting high‑growth stocks amid elevated uncertainty and volatility, while long‑term analysts predict pharma firms like Zydus will benefit from rising demand, increased affordability, and innovation opportunities in healthcare.

Multi‑Commodity Exchange (MCX) shares rose 1.5% to hit an intraday and 52‑week high of ₹3,481.40, up from ₹3,427.70 at the previous close. After the early rally, the stock declined 3.4% as investors booked profits following the year‑high, with trading activity surpassing 1.9 million equity shares. The overall dented sentiment and commodity price volatility have prompted profit booking, as foreign investors pull funds out of emerging markets amid elevated uncertainty.

Welspun Corp. shares surged 5.3% to reach a 52‑week high during Friday’s session, following the company’s latest order book update valued at around ₹4,000 crore. Trading volumes exceeded 2.2 million equity shares across NSE and BSE, powering the high‑volume gains. After touching a day’s high, the stock retraced some gains, trading 4.3% higher at ₹2,808 on NSE. The latest filing showed Welspun secured its largest‑ever order for High‑Frequency Induction Welded (HFIW) pipes worth $412.5 million or ₹4,000 crore, to be manufactured at its upgraded facility in Little Rock, USA, with execution scheduled for FY28 and FY29. The order update brought Welspun’s order book to a record $4.7 billion or ₹45,000 crore.

Allied Blenders & Distillers shares jumped 5.8% to a fresh 52‑week high of ₹753.80, up from ₹712.15 at the previous close. Despite hitting a 52‑week high, the stock declined from its day‑high levels, trading with flat gains on Friday. Trading volumes touched 4 million equity shares across NSE and BSE, triggering high‑volume gains. The latest corporate filing revealed that promoter Bina Kishore Chhabria sold 55,00,000 or 55 lakh equity shares on the open market on September 23.

Engineers India’s stock price jumped 7.4% to a 52‑week high of ₹318.70, up from ₹296.65 at the previous close. Trading volumes surpassed 15 million equity shares across NSE and BSE, triggering high‑volume momentum after the company announced the closure of the trading window for key personnel effective October 1, ahead of the Q2 earnings report. Earlier this week, Africa’s Dangote Group partnered with Engineers India for the expansion of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex to produce 1.4 million barrels per day.
