Engineers India Shares Surge to 52‑Week High on $450 Million Kenyan Refinery Deal
Engineers India Ltd (EIL) shares surged 5.8 % to ₹301.90 on the National Stock Exchange on Tuesday, September 22, reaching a 52‑week and intraday high. The rally followed the announcement that EIL has secured a contract to execute Dangote’s mega greenfield refinery and petrochemical plant in Kenya. According to a regulatory filing, the order is valued at over $450 million for a state‑of‑the‑art 700,000 BPD refinery and petrochemical complex. Under the agreement, EIL will serve as both Project Management Consultant (PMC) and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) consultant.
Once completed, the Kenyan refinery will strengthen fuel production within East Africa, reduce reliance on imports, and support regional energy security. EIL stated that the plant will also play a critical role by supplying petroleum products to the global market. The project’s greenfield nature and 700,000 BPD capacity position it as a significant addition to the continent’s refining infrastructure, potentially altering supply dynamics and enhancing local output.
Beyond the Kenyan order, EIL shares attracted attention as the U.S. government reportedly plans a $5 billion fund to rebuild energy infrastructure in the Middle East damaged during the Iran war, aiming to reduce the region’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas transportation. The Wall Street Journal reported that the proposal could involve matching contributions from eight Middle Eastern countries, potentially creating a $10 billion fund. If implemented, the plan could generate opportunities for companies involved in EPC, pipelines, offshore facilities, gas infrastructure and other energy projects, benefitting firms like EIL.
EIL has already indicated that it expects opportunities from planned pipeline and storage expansion projects in Saudi Arabia and the UAE aimed at reducing reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. The company’s involvement as PMC and EPCM in the Kenyan refinery aligns with its broader strategy to secure engineering and consultancy contracts across the Middle East and Africa. These developments could enhance EIL’s revenue streams and reinforce its position as a leading engineering services provider in the region.
