Persistent Systems Shares Drop 6% as Q2 Margins Miss Estimates

Persistent Systems shares fell about 6% on Friday, October 16, as investors reacted to margin concerns amid a subdued Q2 performance. The mid‑cap IT company’s consolidated net profit declined 27.2% sequentially to ₹352 crore from ₹483 crore in the previous quarter of FY27, while revenue from core operations grew 8.3% to ₹4,664 crore from ₹4,303 crore in Q2 FY26. The drop in profit was largely attributed to a ₹185.34 crore exceptional expense related to the proposed Nagarro acquisition, which also pushed overall expenses up 13% year‑on‑year.

NSE data showed the shares hit an intraday low of ₹5,492, down from ₹5,840 at the prior close, with trading activity exceeding 13 lakh equity shares across NSE and BSE. Investors applied selling pressure after the earnings release, reflecting concerns that the company’s EBIT margin contracted to 15% from 16% in the previous quarter. CLSA analysts said the primary driver of the margin miss was an elevated level of interest expense due to increased current liabilities and higher FX losses.

US‑based JPMorgan and Japan’s Nomura Group analysts warned that Persistent’s margins would likely be hit in FY27 by large deal executions. JPMorgan analysts said the EBITDA margin remained flat but the EBIT margin fell 100 basis points QoQ to 15%, prompting a 40‑60 basis‑point cut in projected margins and a 2‑4% reduction in adjusted EPS. Nomura analysts echoed concerns that FY27 margins could be pressured by ongoing large‑deal activity.

The company’s order book for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, recorded a Total Contract Value of $633.5 million and an Annual Contract Value of $481.0 million. JPMorgan analysts noted that overall deal TCV was soft at 4% YoY, with some closures slipping to Q3 due to delays in client decision‑making amid macro‑related uncertainty. Despite this softness, Persistent remains confident of growth, citing deal wins and a healthy pipeline as key supports.

On a year‑to‑date basis, Persistent’s stock has declined 9.7% in 2026, but rose 4.2% in the last one‑month period and lost 1.7% in the past five market sessions. Over the last five years, the shares have delivered 438% returns to investors, and over 293% gains in the last three years, although the stock has declined nearly 3% in the past one year. The 52‑week high was ₹6,599 on December 23, 2025, and the 52‑week low was ₹4,244.50 on June 30, 2026.

As of the trading session on Friday, October 16, 2026, Persistent Systems’ market capitalisation stood at ₹89,089 crore. The company’s revenue growth remained in line with market estimates, powered by large tech deal ramp‑ups and a win in an in‑vendor consolidation exercise at a large BFS client. Investors will likely keep a close eye on margins and expectations of slower client decision‑making in the upcoming period, as analysts adjust forecasts for FY27 earnings and profitability.
