HDFC Bank Net Profit Grows 5.55% Amid Treasury Constraints

On Saturday, HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private‑sector lender, reported a 5.55% rise in consolidated net profit for the September quarter (Q2 FY27) to ₹20,700 crore. The bank attributed the modest growth to the impact of treasury operations, which limited profit expansion. The earnings announcement comes as the bank is in the midst of a leadership transition, with ICICI Group veteran Anup Bagchi slated to take over as managing director and chief executive later this month, becoming the first outsider to hold the post. Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha has also decided to leave the organisation.

The domestic stock market is expected to open flat with a positive bias on Monday, October 19, as GIFT NIFTY futures suggest the NIFTY50 index will open 12 points higher. In the same period, 35 companies are slated to announce their September quarter earnings today, including Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Zinc (HZL), Union Bank of India, Piramal Finance, LT Technology Services, HFCL, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), Sobha, and Waaree Renewable Technologies. Investors will be watching these disclosures closely for insights into sector performance.

YES Bank, another private‑sector lender, posted a 63.2% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹1,084.08 crore in Q2 FY27, up from ₹664.31 crore in the year‑ago period. On a standalone basis, net profit rose to ₹1,080 crore from ₹654.47 crore a year earlier and ₹1,070.99 crore a quarter earlier. The results do not reflect the potential impact of the Supreme Court ruling on the bank’s write‑down of Additional Tier‑1 bonds worth ₹8,415 crore, which could affect future earnings.

Oberoi Realty Ltd saw sales bookings jump sevenfold year‑on‑year to ₹9,149.69 crore in Q2 FY27, driven by strong sales from its first Delhi‑NCR housing project. Pre‑sales rose to ₹1,299.06 crore from ₹1,299.06 crore a year ago, and the company sold 808 units in the September quarter compared to 158 a year earlier. Total sales bookings for the first six months of the fiscal year rose to ₹10,199.57 crore from ₹2,937.73 crore, reflecting a sharp expansion in the Delhi‑NCR residential market.

Vedanta announced a doubling of its annual zinc production capacity to 500,000 tonnes (Metal‑in‑concentrate) at its South African zinc operations. The expansion at Gamsberg’s Phase II project was backed by an investment of nearly $600 million by Vedanta Zinc International (VZI). The project was inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Limited Director Priya Agarwal‑Hebbar, signalling a significant investment in the company’s global zinc portfolio.

Other notable developments include IDBI Bank reporting a 39% fall in net profit to ₹2,205 crore for Q2 FY27, following the government’s approval of a sale of a 60.72% stake to Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings for about ₹53,000 crore ($5.5 billion). The sale marks the largest foreign investment in an Indian bank and a milestone in the country’s long‑delayed banking privatisation drive. Meanwhile, DLF Ltd plans to launch housing properties worth ₹58,000 crore over the next 2‑3 years, targeting a revenue potential of ₹1,14,500 crore for the 2024‑25 fiscal year, with 14 million sq ft already launched in the past two and a half years.
