BSE SENSEX and NSE NIFTY Rise on September 23 Amid Metal Rally

On Wednesday, September 23, the 30‑share BSE SENSEX climbed 299.17 points, a 0.40 % gain, to close at 74,828.25. The 50‑share NSE NIFTY rose 117.80 points, a 0.50 % increase, to finish at 23,446.80. Both benchmarks reached intraday highs of 74,973.74 for the SENSEX and 23,466.90 for the NIFTY, each peaking at a 0.6 % rise before settling at the closing levels. The gains were supported by a decline in global crude oil prices and buying in metal and capital market stocks.

Bajaj Finance led the NIFTY50 gainers with a 3.41 % rise, followed by Hindalco Industries at 3.17 %, Tata Steel at 3.16 %, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise at 2.64 % and JSW Steel at 2.43 %. These gains reflected investor optimism in the financial and metal sectors. The performance of these stocks contributed significantly to the overall index movement, as they were among the top performers in the market that day.

Metal stocks surged as copper prices hit a fresh all‑time high. Copper futures in the United States reached $6.92 per pound, up about 4.6 % over the last five market sessions, driven by persistent demand, production and supply‑chain disruptions. The rise in copper supported the gains of Tata Steel and JSW Steel, which benefited from the commodity’s price rally, and helped lift the broader metal segment within the NIFTY50.

The top losers in the NIFTY50 were HCL Technologies at –1.08 %, Titan Company at –0.98 %, Infosys at –0.86 %, Coal India at –0.81 % and Tata Consultancy Services at –0.73 %. These declines were among the most significant in the index, with HCL Technologies and Titan Company falling over one percent, while Infosys, Coal India and TCS also posted negative returns, contributing to the overall market volatility that day.

The NIFTY Midcap 100 index closed 0.70 % higher at 62,396.45, supported by gains from Steel Authority of India (6.57 %), PB Fintech (4.50 %), Motilal Oswal Financial Services (3.53 %), Radico Khaitan (3.44 %) and Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) (3.41 %). In contrast, Persistent Systems fell 2.35 %, One 97 Communications (Paytm) 2.17 %, Swiggy 1.95 %, Jubilant Foodworks 1.59 % and Lupin 1.51 %. The NIFTY Smallcap 100 rose 0.89 % to 19,991.50, led by Whirlpool of India (20 %), Ola Electric Mobility (10.69 %), Wockhardt (6.75 %), IFCI (5.28 %) and Five‑Star Business Finance (4.41 %).
