Hindustan Zinc Posts 142% Profit Surge, Shares Rally Amid Strong Q2 FY27 Results

On Monday, Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc Ltd announced a 142% jump in consolidated net profit to ₹6,412 crore for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 (Q2 FY27), up from ₹2,649 crore in the year‑ago period. The rise was attributed to higher metal prices, increased production and a stronger dollar. Total revenue from operations climbed 76.5% to ₹15,093 crore, while EBITDA surged 108% to ₹9,285 crore. The company’s record‑setting mined metal production reached 2,71,000 tonnes, a 5% year‑on‑year increase, and refined metal output rose 7% to 2,64,000 tonnes.

Shares of Hindustan Zinc (HZL) surged as much as 3.98% to ₹559.85 on the NSE in early trade on Wednesday, 21 October, following the post‑market release of the Q2 FY27 figures. By 10:39 AM the stock had retraced to ₹539.50, an uptick of 0.20% from the previous close. The rally reflected investor enthusiasm for the company’s robust earnings and production metrics, which were highlighted in the filing submitted to the BSE.

Chief Executive Officer Amarendu Prakash praised the company’s performance, noting record quarterly mined and refined metal production and expressing honour in leading Hindustan Zinc at this pivotal stage. He reiterated the firm’s focus on disciplined growth, AI‑led innovation and expansion of its critical minerals portfolio to support India’s energy transition while delivering long‑term stakeholder value. As of 30 September 2026, the company held gross investments and cash of ₹17,439 crore and total borrowings of ₹6,171 crore.

Silver production rose 20% YoY to 173 tonnes, contributing significantly to profitability, as silver accounts for roughly 50% of EBITDA. Analysts remain divided on the sustainability of elevated metal prices, citing potential moderation in zinc prices and volatility in silver. Citi cautions that the physical zinc market may stay balanced through 2027, limiting sustained price rallies, and projects LME zinc prices around $3,700 per tonne in 2028. Silver upside depends on easing macroeconomic conditions.

Jefferies highlighted the strong September‑quarter operating performance, noting EBITDA rose 15% sequentially and exceeded estimates by 8%. The brokerage raised its FY27 earnings‑per‑share estimate by 5% but cut FY28 and FY29 estimates by 4% each, citing lower silver price assumptions. Jefferies also observed that Hindustan Zinc trades below its long‑term average EV/EBITDA multiple, suggesting potential upside if silver prices recover.

The company’s Q2 FY27 results underscore a period of robust growth driven by higher metal prices, increased production and a favourable dollar. However, analysts warn that future earnings momentum could be constrained by potential moderation in zinc prices and continued volatility in silver. Investors will closely monitor market dynamics and the company’s ability to sustain its production gains amid changing commodity price conditions.
