BSE Shares Drop 3% as IT Gains Offset Bank Sell‑Offs on Oct 21
On Wednesday, October 21, the SENSEX closed at 73,709.69, a decline of 143.21 points or 0.19%, while the NIFTY50 finished lower by 77.60 points or 0.34% at 22,811.35. The benchmark indices surrendered early gains as Brent crude oil surged past the $111 per barrel mark, and foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth ₹1,148.64 crore. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹3,201.19 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data. The India VIX spiked 9.5% to an intraday high of 16.17, reflecting heightened volatility.
The NIFTY50 was dragged down by selling in Bajaj Finance, which closed 3.27% lower after analysts noted margin pressure for the reporting quarter and the likelihood of further compression in upcoming quarters. Bajaj Finance reported a 29% year‑on‑year surge in consolidated net profit to ₹6,367 crore for the July‑September quarter of FY27, up from ₹4,948 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. BSE Ltd, Eternal, Eicher Motors and Trent followed as top losers, falling 2.63%, 2.45%, 2.43% and 2.41% respectively.
On the upside, IT stocks led the market with Infosys gaining 3.30%, HCL Technologies 3.21%, Tech Mahindra 3.13%, Tata Consultancy Services 2.77% and UltraTech Cement 1.87%. The sector’s strength was attributed to company‑specific earnings and deal visibility, with L&T Technology Services’ earnings and Infosys’ expanded client engagement supporting confidence in the service‑based technology model. These gains were not directly linked to US semiconductor stocks, according to analyst Hariselvan Radhakrishnan.
The NIFTY Midcap 100 fell 922.10 points, or 1.58%, to close at 57,565.85. SRF led the laggards, closing 5.22% lower as its EBITDA margin declined in the September quarter of FY27, hitting a fresh 52‑week low of ₹2,260 per unit. Meesho, United Spirits, Cochin Shipyard and KEI Industries also fell 5%, 4.96%, 4.84% and 4.76% respectively. MphasiS, Persistent Systems, NHPC Ltd, Mankind Pharma and Coforge were the top winners, rising 3%, 2.96%, 2.76%, 1.43% and 1.35% respectively.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 18,487.30, a drop of 448.45 points or 2.37%. Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd fell 10.87%, Gallantt Ispat 8.38%, CreditAccess Grameen 6.96%, TD Power Systems 6.38% and Jyoti CNC Automation 6.33%. Firstsource Solutions, Anand Rathi Wealth, Tata Elxsi, KPIT Technologies and Nuvama Wealth Management were the top gainers, rising 2.97%, 1.67%, 1.55%, 1.44% and 1.02% respectively. The small‑cap index’s decline was driven by a broader sell‑off in the sector, with several mid‑cap and large‑cap stocks also experiencing downward pressure.
Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, noted that Brent moving above $111 and the US 10‑year yield rising to around 5.13% reinforced each other as fundamental headwinds. Expensive energy raises global inflation pressure, while higher bond yields increase borrowing and refinancing costs. If these levels persist, central banks will have less flexibility to support growth, and companies dependent on debt or domestic discretionary demand may face greater pressure on margins and earnings. A temporary decline of one or two dollars in crude would not materially change this outlook.
