Vedanta Iron & Steel Hits 5% Upper Circuit as Group Shares Rise Amid Strong Steel Prices

At 1:17 PM on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Vedanta Iron & Steel shares were locked in the 5% upper circuit limit at ₹32.21 apiece on the NSE, marking a 5.00% rise from the previous close. The same instant Vedanta Oil & Gas was up over 2% to ₹34.57, while the parent firm Vedanta traded at ₹262.35, up 0.71%. Vedanta Power also advanced 1.00% to ₹31.09. These gains came as the broader Vedanta group stocks were trading in positive territory, even though benchmark indices were in the red.

Vedanta Aluminium Metal shares climbed 2.98% to ₹425.35, whereas Hindustan Zinc remained flat at ₹591.80. The NSE prices were recorded at 1:17 PM on September 22, 2026. The group’s diversified portfolio spans zinc, lead, silver, aluminium, oil and gas, iron ore, steel, power and other businesses, with a nearly 61% stake in Hindustan Zinc retained after the restructuring. The demerger created focused entities such as Vedanta Aluminium, Vedanta Oil & Gas, Vedanta Power and Vedanta Iron & Steel.

Market research firm BigMint noted that Vedanta Iron & Steel may be benefiting from a positive sentiment rub‑off linked to the sharp rise in domestic steel prices. Domestic steel prices have hit a four‑year high, driven by costlier raw materials, particularly coking coal, and improving post‑monsoon demand. BigMint’s report predicts the trend to continue over the remaining quarters of the ongoing fiscal year, citing high realisations that can offset rising coking‑coal costs and support margins.

Hot rolled coil (HRC) and cold rolled coil (CRC), two common flat steel products, are currently trading at ₹64,000 per tonne and ₹75,000 per tonne respectively, levels last seen in June 2022. Since August 1, HRC and CRC prices have increased by ₹6,000 per tonne and ₹8,500 per tonne respectively. At the start of August, HRC and CRC prices stood at ₹58,000 per tonne and ₹66,500 per tonne, indicating a significant upward swing in the market for these steel grades.

Other steel stocks such as Jindal Steel, Tata Steel and JSW Steel were also trading in the green, reflecting a broader bullish sentiment in the sector. Vedanta Iron & Steel’s portfolio includes Sesa Iron Ore, with mining operations in Goa and Karnataka, and ESL Steel, an integrated steel producer in Jharkhand with a design capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per annum. The entity focuses on the group’s ferrous metals business, including iron ore mining and steel production.

The broader Vedanta group operates and owns assets across India and overseas, with Vedanta Aluminium housing the Lanjigarh refinery, Jharsuguda smelter and its stake in BALCO. Vedanta Oil & Gas comprises the Cairn oil and gas business, while Vedanta Power includes assets such as Talwandi Sabo Power and other thermal power projects. These developments underscore the group’s strategic focus on diversified natural resources and the impact of rising steel prices on its iron and steel arm.
