Vedanta Group Shares Mixed Amid De‑merger Progress and Market Rally

At 12:13 PM on Monday, September 21, Vedanta Ltd shares were trading 2.32 % lower at ₹261.40 apiece on the NSE, while Hindustan Zinc was down 0.61 % at ₹592.35. Vedanta Power shares were also trading 0.82 % lower at ₹30.92 apiece. The group’s stocks were trading mixed in noon deals amid a rally in the benchmark indices, the S&P BSE Sensex and the Nifty50, reflecting a broader market optimism that day.

Vedanta Iron and Steel was up 0.10 % at ₹30.94, and Vedanta Aluminium Metal gained 0.72 % to ₹419.50. Vedanta Oil and Gas was trading 0.88 % lower at ₹33.96 on the NSE. The table below summarises the percentage change, price and trend for each of the six Vedanta Group stocks at the time of reporting, showing a mix of gains and declines across the portfolio.

The demerger, first announced in September 2023, originally proposed splitting the diversified businesses into six listed entities: Vedanta Ltd, Vedanta Aluminium, Vedanta Oil & Gas, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Steel and Ferrous Materials, and Vedanta Base Metals. The group later decided not to proceed with the Base Metals undertaking, leaving four entities to be carved out of Vedanta Ltd, a decision aimed at simplifying the corporate structure.

The revised scheme received approval from the National Company Law Tribunal in December 2025, paving the way for the four resulting entities—Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vedanta Oil & Gas, Vedanta Iron & Steel and Vedanta Power—to begin trading separately on the BSE and NSE on 15 June 2026. Shareholders received shares in each of the four entities in a 1:1 ratio for every Vedanta Ltd share held as of the May 1… record date, ensuring a smooth transition for investors.

Following the restructuring, Vedanta Ltd continues to house businesses including Hindustan Zinc and future‑facing ventures. The rationale behind the demerger was to create focused, sector‑specific businesses with independent management, capital allocation and balance sheets, aiming to unlock value by allowing each business to pursue its own growth strategy and attract a more relevant investor base, while improving transparency and accountability.

On 15 June 2026, Chairman Anil Agarwal outlined an ambitious growth roadmap for the newly demerged businesses, stating each vertical has the potential to become a $100 billion opportunity over time. He also hinted at a possible overseas relisting of parent Vedanta Resources, noting such a move is unlikely before the next three years, with the company having been delisted from the London Stock Exchange and potentially relisted in America or elsewhere.
