Coal India’s Capex Surge and Production Upswing Ahead of Q2 Earnings
Coal India announced on Tuesday, 27 October, that its capital expenditure for the April‑September period of FY27 rose 27% to ₹7,966 crore, reaching 109% of the planned outlay for the half‑year. The company had spent ₹6,283 crore on capex in the previous fiscal year, according to the official filing. Management said the increase was driven by a continued focus on strengthening mining infrastructure, acquiring land, procuring heavy earth‑moving machinery and advancing diversification projects. These strategic investments are expected to strengthen operational capabilities and support the achievement of production and supply targets for the ongoing financial year.
Earlier this month, Coal India disclosed that its coal supplies increased 12.5% to 61.20 million tonnes (MT) in September 2026, up from 54.40 MT in the same period a year earlier, driven by rising power demand in the country. Supplies to the power sector grew 10.63%, rising to 48.90 MT from 44.20 MT in the previous fiscal month. During the period, coal production grew 9.18% to 53.50 MT, compared with 49 MT last year. In the September quarter (Q2), supplies recorded a 12.04% growth, with production rising 3.81% YoY to 151.37 MT, versus 145.82 MT in the corresponding quarter of the prior fiscal year.
Coal India’s board will convene on Thursday, 29 October 2026, to consider and approve the July‑September quarter results for FY27. The board will also deliberate on a second interim dividend for the current financial year, though the dividend amount will be announced later. The company has issued three dividends in the calendar year 2026, including a ₹5.25 per share payout in FY2026‑27. The trading window for key personnel will remain closed until 3 November 2026, marking 48 hours after the September quarter earnings update.
NSE data shows that Coal India shares have delivered more than 132% returns to investors over the last five years and over 28% over the last three years. The stock rose 1.8% in the past year, while year‑to‑date it has gained 0.8% in 2026 and declined 5.2% in the last month. In the past five market sessions, the share price fell 1.8%. The shares peaked at a 52‑week high of ₹491.25 on 30 April 2026 and hit a 52‑week low of ₹369.60 on 25 November 2025. The market capitalisation was over ₹2.47 lakh crore as of the 27 October 2026 trading session.
The 27% rise in capex brings the total spending for the first half of FY27 to ₹7,966 crore, surpassing the planned outlay by 109%. In comparison, the company spent ₹6,283 crore on capex last fiscal year. Management highlighted that the investment focus on mining infrastructure, land acquisition, heavy earth‑moving machinery and diversification projects underpins the company’s strategy to meet production and supply targets for the ongoing financial year.
Investors are expected to focus on Coal India’s capex push alongside higher production and supply metrics, which are anticipated to drive the upcoming Q2 earnings release scheduled for later this week. The company’s board will also declare a second interim dividend on the same day as the earnings approval, though the amount remains undisclosed. The trading window for key personnel will close on 3 November 2026, 48 hours after the September quarter earnings update, ensuring a clear post‑earnings period for the market.
