Vedanta Iron and Steel Shares Drop 5% to Lower Circuit on Revenue Contraction and Cost Rise

Vedanta Iron and Steel shares fell 5% at the opening bell on Wednesday, October 28, reaching the lower circuit at ₹26.56 per share. The decline followed a 5% drop to the intraday low, compared with ₹27.95 at the previous close. After the initial dip, the stock recovered slightly but remained 3.7% lower at ₹26.73, with trading volume exceeding 3.8 million shares across NSE and BSE. Investors cited revenue contraction, higher costs, and seasonal impact as key concerns.

In the July to September quarter of FY27, Vedanta Iron and Steel recorded a contraction in overall consolidated net losses to ₹324 crore, down from ₹477 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Core operations revenue declined 2.4% year‑on‑year to ₹2,788 crore, compared with ₹2,858 crore in the same quarter of FY26‑27. Management attributed the subdued performance to seasonal disruptions in iron ore production, planned plant shutdowns and higher input and conversion costs, which weighed on operating profitability during the quarter.

Raw material cost increased 9.2% year‑on‑year to ₹1,714 crore in the September quarter of FY27, compared with ₹1,569 crore in the same period a year earlier. This rise in input costs contributed to the higher operating expenses reported by the company. The company’s management highlighted that elevated input and conversion costs, along with seasonal disruptions, were significant factors affecting profitability during the period.

Since its demerger from Vedanta Limited and listing on the National Stock Exchange on June 15, 2026, Vedanta Iron and Steel has risen more than 27% year‑to‑date. However, in the last month the stock has declined 14.3%, and it has lost 4.2% over the past five market sessions. The company’s market capitalisation stood at ₹10,393 crore as of the trading session on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Market participants reacted to the company’s financial disclosures, noting that the revenue contraction and rising input costs were key concerns. The stock’s lower circuit hit on October 28 prompted a brief recovery, but the overall trend remains negative in the short term. Investors will likely monitor upcoming earnings releases and commodity price movements to gauge future direction.
